Sir, - Many thanks to Frank Kilfeather (An Irishman's Diary, March 30th) for giving me another weapon in my fight against the use of mobile phones while driving. Mr Kilfeather mentioned some evidence that use of mobile phones can interfere with short-term memory, cognitive functions, and attention. It is possible that unknown dangers lurk in this latest toy which we all use so blithely and most of the time so unnecessarily.

I repeat my question: must we wait for the first phone-related death before enacting legislation? I also call on the motor insurance companies to use their considerable power by limiting cover on accidents occurring in these circumstances. Money talks. - Yours, etc., Dorene Groocock,
