Sir, - Michelle Smith has deservedly won two Olympic gold medals for Ireland, and has thereby proved that she is the undisputed women's 400 metres swimming champion of the world. Every Irishman and Irishwoman is justifiably happy and proud at such a unique achievement. Michelle's truly an inspiration for all of us, both young and old.
I believe that we should record in a practical way our appreciation to Michelle Smith by sending a postcard to her c/o the Olympic Council of Ireland, 27 Mespil Road, Dublin 4, (a) congratulating her on her wonderful Olympic success, and (b) requesting the Government to construct, without delay, a national 50 metre swimming pool, appropriately designated in her honour, for the training of future potential world class Irish swimmers.
