Ní Cillín also writes of Maj John MacBride’s execution, the anniversary of which occurs today: “His was the loneliest death of all and there was contempt and rage for British hypocrisy on that May 6th when we heard of his execution. He was shot mainly – or entirely- for his fight in South Africa 16 years previously. But still there was pride that he stood in his proper place with the young leaders”.
