LEGACY OF THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Madam, - I am writing in response to Mary Hannigan's report in your edition of June 24th about my son, Damien O'Donovan, who won a gold medal in the Special Olympic World Games.

My sister commented: "It was as good as being there." My response was: "It was better than being there".

Mary Hannigan's report added another magical element to a wonderful occasion. She truly captured Damien's personality in all its joy and determination. Re-reading her words vividly recalls the emotion of that magical day in my heart. Her description of the occasion has also managed to convey the emotion and excitement to our friends and to the wider community.

A gentleman stopped Damien in the street yesterday evening to congratulate him on his wonderful achievement. He asked if he could touch the medal, and told Damien that his family would treasure the medal and his achievement for many generations to come. A wonderful truth struck me: this hero in my life will leave a strong footprint on our family's history. Future generations of our family will see Damien as the courageous, determined hero I know him to be.
