Leaving Cert fails the test

Madam, – The current education system is not just failing, but has failed

Madam, – The current education system is not just failing, but has failed. As a Leaving Cert student, I can find only faults with the Irish education process. Students are forced into an oppressive and narrow-minded system that forbids us from forming our own opinions or pursuing what we are truly interested in. Rather, we are required to take the Victorian approach of rote learning, which results in a complete lack of understanding of why we are learning a particular topic or how it is significant.

This has all been said before, so why has nothing been done? A project completed before the exams worth 20 per cent is not enough – we need radical change and a complete rethinking of what it means to be educated. – Yours, etc,
