Madam,- The article by Louise Holden in your Education & Parenting section of April 29th was interesting for what it omitted. She used the term "grinds" and applied it to all private tuition.

Grinds is an appalling term and I would lie to see its use in an educational context ended.

Nevertheless, there is a sector of private tuition that teaches children with specific learning difficulties (dyslexia). This is a specialised area that concentrates on alternative methods of teaching reading, spelling and numeracy.

This special tuition is not catered for in the Irish educational system. Therefore, parents have to look elsewhere for assistance. - Yours, etc.,
