Sir, - I cannot agree with, and feel I must take issue with, both E. O'Sullivan (October 29th) and E. Morris (November 4th) who complain of the road-building through the Glen of the Downs.
Firstly, it must be made clear that the proposed development will take in only a small proportion of the area, approximately 80 square acres, which still leaves most of this beautiful woodland area available for the public to enjoy. Secondly, and most importantly, this proposed road is badly needed nearby Kilmacanogue is currently being overrun daily by juggernauts and other heavy vehicles, leaving this village in a state of constant danger with parents being afraid to let their children out on the streets.
There is also a sound economic reason for the new road. It is part of the main Dublin to Rosslare route and the proposed improvement will enable goods to be transported more rapidly and efficiently, which will encourage trade, create jobs and benefit the economy as a whole.
It is certainly regrettable that a few acres of our scenic woodland will have to be sacrificed, but to me it seems patently clear that the benefits will outweigh the drawbacks. - Yours, etc.,
Daniel English,
Greystones, Co Wicklow.
