Sir, - I would like to express my disappointment at Micheal O'Muircheartaigh's reference to camogie players as "girls" not women during his RTE commentary on the Galway/Cork game last Sunday.

On mature reflection, I can forgive him for his oversight. This mistake is not my primary concern. No, what concerns me much more is that, when corrected, he proceeded to trivialise the whole issue on Radio 1. Despite the correction, he made the claim that the players didn't mind what they were called as long as they were classed as good athletes. As a female sportsperson, I beg to differ.

I sincerely hope that he will not refer to the female footballers from Monaghan and Waterford as "girls" at the senior Women's All-Ireland Football final in four weeks' time, just as he did not refer to the Clare and Offaly hurlers as "boys". - Yours, etc., Fionnuala Ruane,
