Madam, - In seeking to resolve the issue of the wearing of religious symbols as part of official uniforms, may I suggest that the Garda Commissioner could usefully look at the example already set by his colleagues in the Defence Forces.

In the three arms of the defence forces chaplains are permitted to wear black shirts with clerical collars, rather than the regulation collar and tie. If such religious symbolism is permitted in the Army, Navy and Air Corps, surely it should be possible to accommodate the turban within the Garda. - Yours, etc,
