Sir, - Mr Martin Corless (October 21st) says that "fulsome" is pronounced "foolsome". It is not. According to the Concise Oxford Dictionary, "fulsome" has a short vowel while "fool" has a long one.

However, in Belfast and the surrounding area many people pronounce "full" as /fu:1 or /f-:1/. Maybe Mr Corless comes from there. Yours, etc.
