Madam, - On a recent Late Late Show (November 3rd), nutrition expert and best-selling author Patrick Holford appeared to discuss his latest successful publication, Food is Better Medicine than Drugs (Piatkus, 2006). May I say how impressed I was by him and his performance on the show?
He remained calm and unruffled and extremely polite, despite the best efforts of the clearly unhappy representative of the medical profession to rubbish his book and the lack of enthusiasm of Pat Kenny. The author's findings were to the effect that certain ailments could be remedied by proper eating habits and the use of particular food supplements, as opposed to prescription drugs, which almost always have side-effects (and are very expensive to boot). He spoke in particular about chromium and cinnamon to help regulate blood sugar levels and niacin to reduce cholesterol levels.
It is my belief that one day the medical profession will come around to this way of thinking, whether or not they and the pharmaceutical companies like it, and the sooner the better, in my view. - Yours, etc,
Dr BRENDA O'HANRAHAN, Sandymount, Dublin 4.
