Sir, - With reference to the article on fluoridation by Kevin O'Sullivan, (The Irish Times, May 18th) I would like to know how much more evidence the Government needs before it decides to stop this compulsory fluoridation of our water system. There seems to have been a lot of scientific studies presented to various health ministers over the years and yet not one study has been carried out here on the effects of "fluoridation" on Irish people.
As a mother of a baby and a toddler, I find it most distressing to think that it is made compulsory for me to give my children something which has been proven to cause cancer, osteoporosis and genetic damage. I think I should have a choice as to what goes into the water that my children drink and I think it is about time I was given the choice.
A recent study in Europe showed that Ireland had the highest number of cases of meningitis, and that it was something in the Irish make-up that made us more vulnerable. Could it have anything to do with the fact that we are being overdosed with fluoride?
