Fawning and raving in the park

Sir, – As a resident of Chapelizod, I am trying to find out how a series of concerts was permitted in the Phoenix Park, Dublin from July 5th to July 8th (Front page, July 9th).

No notice to my knowledge was given to residents of the concerts which have been characterised by extremely loud sound volumes and people boozing and urinating all over the park, as well as trails of broken glass and other debris. In particular, I would like to complain about the so-called “rave” concert held on Saturday which was characterised by the repetitive beat of rave music and what can only be termed as mobs of teenagers, most of whom were intoxicated by various substances. The atmosphere in Chapelizod was extremely intimidating and frightening. In general the atmosphere reeked of a situation out of control.

The irony is that the park is currently (and rightly) full of notices drawing attention to dog exclusion zones as the deer are fawning, while human beings stumble through and across the soggy grass out of their trees.

I am trying to establish how a permit was issued for these concerts, and as a resident, whether such concerts will be ongoing? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – One cannot blame 45,000 people for the madness of a handful of thugs, but it is unacceptable that families had to stay on in Dublin Zoo for safety reasons for fear of groups of people drinking copious amounts of alcohol before entering the concert (Front page, July 9th).

Surely at this stage, to save ourselves any more embarrassment as a nation, it’s time to stop all advertising of alcohol in this country. We can’t handle it. We have a gene missing that the majority of European countries have.

One could be forgiven for thinking that these groups of binge drinkers had an alcohol problem! What! This is normal in most towns and cities on a Saturday night! Our alcohol industry, along with a wink and nod from our politicians, has created this monster.

Alcohol-sponsored sports events and all advertising should be banned. This drug is ruining our nation. – Yours, etc,
