EXPANSION OF IRISH FISHING

BRENDAN O'KELLY,

BRENDAN O'KELLY,

Sir, - It is rather disingenuous of the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources to attribute the expansion of the Irish fishing industry to membership of the EU (Irish Times, August 15th).

It can be justifiably argued that the terms of the EEC Fisheries Policy which the Government accepted in the 1972 Accession Treaty and the subsequent iniquitous quota regime based on historical performance, still remain the prime inhibiting factors in the future development of the Industry. - Yours, etc.,

BRENDAN O'KELLY, Former chairman and chief executive, Bord Iascaigh Mhara, Foxrock, Co Dublin
