DUBLIN TRAFFIC CHANGES

PATRICK DUFFY,

PATRICK DUFFY,

Sir, - At last Dublin has taken a serious traffic initiative, only to face the usual criticism of the begrudgers.

Are those Opposition politicians who have so immediately rushed in to complain familiar, for instance, with the Metro maps of any European cities? Do they not accept that they take just a little getting used to? Natives of Dublin will adapt to the system, as they have adapted to all previous changes, and will quickly recognise and use routes that produce improvements in traffic flow.

Visitors will at last be able to plan their journeys through Dublin: for them the use of numbers is far easier than learning a plethora of place names.

The layout also lends itself to the easy introduction of future traffic limitation measures, and to increasing the use of public transport.

Dublin is to be congratulated, and should be encouraged to persevere to success. It would be appalling if the Minister for the Environment permitted or encouraged a "not-invented-here" reaction from his Department to hinder this progressive move. - Yours, etc.,

PATRICK DUFFY,

Old Connaught Avenue,

Bray,

Co Wicklow.

Sir, - Any commuters who have trouble making sense of Dublin City Council's new signposts, or feel that too much information is being conveyed, always have the option of cycling or using the bus! - Yours, etc.,
