Sir, On the "Queen's highway at Drumcree last Sunday, Orange sashes adorned elderly gents with dark suits, hard hats, white gloves, and graveyard faces. On Monday morning, most of the well heeled suits returned to their counting houses and parlours, their places "behind the wire" taken by younger men sporting tight haircuts, T-shirts, jeans and sashes. The age and complexion of faces changed overnight from old and grey to young and livid and it is the younger generations, inspired, by their elders, who are now wreaking havoc.
Today, the "suits" are in their offices calculating How much money they can claim in compensation from the underwriters the British Government for the destruction caused by riots. If these so called loyal sons of Ulster knew that their actions on Sunday would lead to their having to pay out of their own pockets for the consequences of their actions, these Queen's highway men might have cast more responsible eyes over the green fields of Drumcree.
Mr David Trimble and his be suited Orange masters cannot be allowed to escape responsibility for the orgy of sectarianism that has erupted this week. One moment he is fanning the flames of hatred at the barricades, a few seconds later he is before uncritical TV cameras, posing as a caring political fireman.
Mr Adams and Sinn Fein/IRA are not the only people who have a lot to answer for. Yours, etc., Killarney Road, Bray Co Wicklow.
