Sir, - As a member of the "motoring lobby" I would like to suggest some cultural tenets for the members of the "cycling lobby", including:
Payment of third party insurance, so that there is coverage in the event of scraping layers of paint from the side of my car. Payment of road tax to share the burden with fellow road users. Observation of basic rules of the road (e.g. stopping at red lights, not cycling on footpaths, indicating when turning). Putting front and rear lights on bicycles - especially useful in the dark.
I find myself castigated enough these days for driving my car to work without also worrying about being blamed for hitting a cyclist with no illumination breaking a red light. Unfortunately, that worry is a daily one. - Yours, etc.,
Stillorgan Wood, Kilmacud, Co Dublin.
