Council’s plan for College Green

Sir, – Stephen Wall (April 20th) fails to explain how the large number of bus routes that currently cross the city through Dame Street and College Green would operate if Dublin City Council's plan to close this area to bus traffic were implemented. Saying that "East-West bus routes will be rerouted in a sensible fashion to other streets" conceals the fact that there are few other streets capable of carrying this traffic across town. The result threatens to obstruct a substantial part of the cross-town bus network, with serious consequences for traffic congestion and the smooth functioning of the public transport system and the life of the city.

A pedestrian piazza in College Green is a rather nice idea, but not if it inflicts damage on the city’s already creaking infrastructure. The aim may be laudable, but the price to be paid by the city is far too high. – Yours, etc,

EAMON O’FLAHERTY,

Dublin 7.
