Sir, Your European Diarist on April 11th ridiculed the Greek Minister's statement to the EC Consumer Affairs Council as unintelligible and worse. I read the statement aloud to an Irish housewife and an American visitor. They both found it crystal clear and, recognised it as an important critique of consumerism, the market and the mass media. Why did your correspondent treat it so frivolously9

Confronted by an intelligent and literate commentary on the excesses of media consumerism, he remarked that it was "Greek" gobbledygook to him. The impression he gave was that these odd Mediterraneans are not entitled to be enraged by the total domination of their children's imaginations by, among other things, toy producing American multi-nationals, when we Irish and our media have rolled over and allowed our bellies to be tickled by these same forces. Yours, etc.,
