Sir, – The Very Rev Ian D Corbett laments (May 9th) that the so-called “elderly male leadership of the Church of Ireland . . . fails conspicuously to engage with contemporary scholarship”. Is he suggesting that this “contemporary scholarship” take precedence over biblical teaching? The good dean goes on to insist that “Ireland has changed”, and indeed it has. That doesn’t mean Christianity has to be led along like a dog on a lead, constantly changing and subject to the whims and fashions of a recalcitrant society. – Yours, etc,
