British Labour leaders

Sir, – Reading Denis Staunton (London Letter, November 27th) about the leadership problems in the British Labour party is a case of déjà vu all over again.

In the 1950s, a hard-left faction lead by Nye Bevan attempted to take over the party, followed by similar efforts by Tony Benn in the 1980s. The result was a total of 30 years in opposition. The present scenario sees the party leader, Jeremy Corbyn cut from the same cloth. The Conservatives have the “men in dark suits” to sort out leadership issues. Maybe it’s time for Labour to adopt a similar approach but avoiding Michael Foot’s donkey jacket!

– Yours, etc,

BRENDAN BRACKEN
