BLIND JUSTICE

Sir, It appears that justice is blind after all, but not in the way that society would expect her to be

Sir, It appears that justice is blind after all, but not in the way that society would expect her to be. Does nobody in the legal profession find it monstrous that it convicted child abuser's sentence be reduced from five years to a paltry six months, because he apparently was "deprived of an expeditious trial"? (report November 7th).

Was this lack of expediency because of laxness on behalf of the Gardai or the slowness of the DPP? No, it was because an abused, confused, frightened child was unable to accuse an older member of her family of a terrible crime. Is this not the natural reaction of every victim?

It appears that the only way we can expect an expeditious trial for child abusers is if they themselves hotfoot it from the scene of the crime to the local Garda station. Will our legal system ever think of the rights of the victim? - Yours, etc.,
