Sir, – Wesley J Beck made a good point about the difficulty of reading print on the fold of the newspaper (Letters, December 31st). The best hotels and clubs used to be ahead of the times on that by securing their newspapers vertically on a metre-long pole, thus allowing entire pristine pages to be read, albeit somewhat awkwardly. I always understood those poles were to dissuade light-fingered guests from removing newspapers gratis. Surely that points to the value of opinion poles. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Wesley J Beck’s concerns about news disappearing into the folds of his Irish Times can at least be dealt with along the lines at which he hints, but mine is a much tougher issue. I’m a subscriber to the excellent online Irish Times, but how do I light my wood-burning stove with it, as I used to do with the paper version? The stove sits sulking in my living room awaiting, as I do, a solution. – Yours, etc,
