Sir, - After listening to yet another exhibition of circumlocution by law professor William Binchy on RTE's Morning Ireland (January 17th), I suggest it is time that we anti-abortionists told him, bluntly, to shut up.

The legal fact of the matter is, as my article, "Forget about another referendum and let us retain the status quo on abortion" explained (The Irish Times, December 29th), that the Supreme Court `X' case judgment said nothing about abortions, and limited pregnancy terminations to those necessary to save mothers' lives.

That is a fact with which all anti-abortionists, Catholics included, should be content. Another referendum is simply unnecessary. Professor Binchy has misled people long enough. It is time that he and other Catholics, instead of being distracted by the referendum red herring, put work into motivating male Catholics to do what they are obliged to do to minimise unplanned pregnancies. - Yours, etc.,
