‘A secular Pentecost’

Sir, – I really would encourage Dr John Murray (June 4th) to re-read the article by Fr Gerry O'Hanlon ("Church leadership in Ireland needs to empower the laity", Opinion & Analysis, June 1st). The article refers to the joy on the faces of those listening to the results of the marriage equality referendum as being "like a kind of secular Pentecost". There was no suggestion that it was a "new Pentecost". It is exactly this kind of reaction from Dr Murray that makes conversation and dialogue very difficult within the Catholic Church. We really do need to listen to each other if we want to bring about the kind of awakening and renewal within the church that many hope for but wonder if it will ever happen. – Yours, etc,

PAULA MOLLOY,

Baldoyle, Dublin 13.
