Madam, – In the United States the most significant day in the calendar is Independence Day, which is July 4th. In France, it is Bastille Day, on July 14th. In Ireland, we commemorate the Rising on Easter Monday, with no fixed date. Instead of marking the actual anniversary of this event, we use a kind of lazy shorthand and move the anniversary around the calendar. It will be 2079 before it is commemorated on its actual anniversary again. It is time the situation was regularised.
– Yours, etc,
