Occupied Territories Bill shows a modicum of self-restraint

Now the Irish Government should cease meddling in Middle East affairs

Sir, – The decision not to include services within the scope of the Occupied Territories Bill demonstrates a modicum of self-restraint. It demonstrates that the Government loves Ireland more than it hates Israel.

It demonstrates that it will not sacrifice the jobs of thousands of Irish workers simply to enable it to preen on the international stage. The next step to wisdom lies in ceasing altogether to meddle in Middle East affairs and to focus on the many domestic crises instead.

Rather than angrily criticising Israeli settlements, the Taoiseach might even like to contact prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu and ask what the secret to building so many new homes is, because the Government clearly needs some fresh ideas here, no matter the source. – Yours, etc,
