Sir, – In the late 18th century the Dublin Paving Board employed crossing sweepers to remove horse manure from the city streets. The board sold it to farmers and with the proceeds bought paving setts, some of which can still be seen in Temple Bar or at the Cork Hill gate to Dublin Castle. So, our capital’s streets are paved by equine produce, appropriately for a horse loving country. And recycling has long been an effective and proven civic activity. – Yours, etc,
ESTHER CLARK,
Dublin.
