A chara, – Kathy Sheridan somehow manages to assess everything through the prism of gender (“It’s as if we’re seeing Kamala Harris for the first time”, Opinion & Analysis, July 10th). She accepts that the role of vice-president of the US is one that “demands near invisibility as part of the deal” yet cannot help herself but suggest that in the case of Ms Harris it is because she is a woman.
She claims that a recent and uncharacteristic period of silence from Donald Trump is due to the fact that he is waiting to see if his opponent will be a woman. Which, according to your columnist, would “change everything”.
A more rational explanation for Mr Trump’s silence might be that when the media are in a feeding frenzy regarding Joe Biden’s cognitive capacity, even he realises it would be foolish to act as a distraction that would be very welcome for the Democrats and his probable opponent in November. – Is mise,
