Redevelopment of Casement Park

European Championships in 2028

Sir, – I have noted a number of letters recently regarding the redevelopment of Casement Park in Belfast, including that from Colette Cummins (Letters, November 10th). Ms Cummins suggests that a modern 40,000-seater stadium is overdue in Belfast, and it should be built by the governments of both UK and Ireland, for the use of any sport in Northern Ireland when that capacity is required.

Perhaps she is unaware that such a plan for a 40,000 seater stadium existed for the site of the former Maze Prison (aka Long Kesh), which was to be used for soccer, rugby and Gaelic games. However, in 2008 the plan was scuppered by the two main unionist parties, who withdrew support for the project. Following this it was agreed that government funding would be provided for the development of three stadiums for soccer, rugby and Gaelic games. The first two have happened at Windsor Park and the Kingspan Stadium (home of Ulster Rugby). The development of Casement Park was delayed due to protracted planning issues, which have now been resolved. Hopefully it will now be developed in time for the European Championships in 2028. – Yours, etc,

DANNY BOYD,

Belfast.
