Sir, – A letter writer seems to believe that the main pollution problem on our beaches is down to dogs (Letters, October 12th).
As a frequent visitor to my local beaches, I disagree.
The vast majority of dog walkers I come across are very careful and invariably pick up after their dogs and keep them under control. They should also remember that dog walkers are there year-round and not just when the sun shines. Dogs don’t leave beer cans or large amounts of rubbish on the beaches. These items together with substantial amounts of graffiti are left by the human users, whose presence some seem to prioritise.
The beaches should be for everybody.
If there are a few irresponsible dog owners, why not prosecute them and show respect for the huge majority who enjoy their daily constitutional with their four-legged companions? – Yours, etc,
JOHN MacINERNEY,
