Sir, – Regarding out of office auto-reply emails, Anna Mackey tells us “the bravest and most sensible” one she has seen contained a request to resend on the date of the worker’s return from leave, so as to prospectively eliminate the need to trawl through an extensive backlog on their first day back (Letters, July 4th).
It seems few people see the need to follow up, reducing workload. I can suggest a braver, more honest and perhaps amusing option for colleagues stuck at their desks. “This is an automatically generated email. You are reviewing it because I am out of the office, on annual leave. If I was in the office, you probably wouldn’t receive a reply at all.” – Yours, etc,
