A mother who was refused entry to a busy Galway pub because she had a baby with her was awarded €800 compensation by the Equality tribunal.

In the case, one of 16 decisions published yesterday by the tribunal, Richardson's Pub, of Eyre Square, Galway, was ordered to pay the compensation after an equality officer found the pub had discriminated against Ms Agnes Barry on the family status ground.

"The equality officer considered that the pub had not shown understanding of Ms Barry's position, had not taken time to explain the pub's concerns or discuss the options with her," according to the tribunal.

However, the equality officer found that the pub did not normally engage in any form of discriminatory treatment of parents with children.

The tribunal upheld eight of the 16 decisions, four each under employment equality and equal status legislation. In other cases, the tribunal also found in favour of a disabled woman who was refused help with her bags in her local shop in Dublin by the manager in what was described as "an isolated incident". The shop, Bob's News & Deli, Darndale, Dublin, was ordered to pay 500 compensation.

For many years, staff assisted Ms Claire Maguire by shopping for her while she waited outside in her four-wheeled scooter. "As a result of the incident, Ms Maguire did not visit the shop for 18 months," it said. "The equality officer found no evidence that the shop operates any form of discriminatory policy against people with disabilities, and noted that that Ms Maguire was now visiting the shop again."

A health board was found to have discriminated against an employee on the grounds of race after he was unsuccessful in a job-promotion interview.

Monaghan VEC was also ordered to pay 10,000 compensation to teacher, Ms Mary Carroll, after the tribunal found she had been discriminated against on the basis of age when she was turned down for promotion to the position of special duties teacher at Beech Hill College.
