Woman dies in Cork house fire

One woman died and another was injured in a house fire in Gurranabraher on the north side of Cork city last night.

One woman died and another was injured in a house fire in Gurranabraher on the north side of Cork city last night.

The fire broke out in a downstairs front room of the two-story terraced house on St Enda's Road just before 10pm. It is understood that a woman in her 50s, who is from the Gurranabraher area and was visiting the house, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her body was removed from the house by firefighters using breathing apparatus. Efforts were made to resuscitate her at the scene.

The owner of the house, a woman in her early 50s, was dragged from the smoke-filled building by her daughter and a garda.

She was suffering from smoke inhalation, but the emergency services resuscitated her at the scene and she was taken to the Mercy University Hospital.
