The Football League tonight unanimously rejected Wimbledon's application to relocate to Milton Keynes.

The English First Division club unveiled ambitious plans to build a 28,000-capacity stadium in the Buckinghamshire town earlier this month.

Fans of the Dons, who have shared Crystal Palace's Selhurst Park since leaving Plough Lane in 1991, were staunchly opposed to the controversial move and had protested at last Saturday's opening-day victory over Birmingham.

Football League chief executive David Burns revealed: "Following a long and detailed discussion the Board has concluded that the proposed move by Wimbledon Football Club to Milton Keynes cannot be sanctioned."
