A Cork man who assaulted his girlfriend was told by a judge in the Central Criminal Court yesterday that he was lucky not to be facing a murder charge.

Mr Justice Flood read from the woman's account of being choked by the man and added: "If this had gone on for two minutes more you would be here on a murder charge."

Sentencing was adjourned to December 17th, 1998.
