SINÉAD O’Connor has cancelled the remaining dates of her world tour saying she is too “unwell” to perform and “still recovering from a serious breakdown”.

She reported the news on her official website yesterday before closing it down last night.

She wrote: “As you all know I had a very serious breakdown between December and March and I had been advised by my doctor not to go on tour but didn’t want to let anyone down as the tour was already booked. I stupidly ignored his advice – attempting to be stronger than I actually am. I sincerely apologise for any difficulties this may cause”.

On a new career high due to the very favourable reviews received by her new album, How About I Be Me (And You Be You)?, O’Connor says there will be no further public performances this year. The entire US/Canada leg of the world tour has been cancelled.

The singer also closed down her Twitter account: “This account will close tonight for reasons of wishing to be out of limelight and showbiz. All [are] bad triggers for a woman with a mental illness”.
