Two British police officers were killed today as they tried to stop a white van that had been chased across two counties.

The pair are understood to have been trying to use a "stinger" device to halt the van near Worthington, north of Leicester, after the van had failed to stop in Shirley, near Solihull, West Midlands.

The crash between the van and a marked police car happened shortly after 1.30 a.m. today on the A42 in Leicestershire. It is thought that one of the officers died instantly and the other later. Neither have been named until formal identification has taken place. A man (38) was arrested and was being held in Leicester. PA
