Two men have been arrested by police investigating dissident republican activity in Northern Ireland, it was disclosed today.

A number of items were seized for examination following planned raids in Irvinestown and Enniskillen, Fermanagh, and Drumquin, Tyrone.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) spokesman said: "The operation was against dissident republican activity."

The searches took place yesterday.

Earlier this year chief constable Sir Hugh Orde warned the threat from renegade republicans opposed to the peace process was at its highest level for some time.

There have also been police operations aimed at disrupting groupings in county Armagh.

Dissidents have been blamed for five murder attempts against policemen since November.
