He added that two bombings carried out by FARC terrorists in Colombia bore uncanny resemblance to IRA actions of the past.

Mr Trimble claimed in a lecture to the Institute of Directors in London that the IRA continued to engage in beatings and murders.

Three suspected IRA men are still detained in Colombia awaiting trial on charges of training members of the rebel forces.

Sinn Féin president Mr Gerry Adams has yet to make a decision to attend US Congressional hearings due to begin next Wednesday on the republican movement's alleged links with FARC.

Mr Trimble said Sinn Féin's qualified enthusiasm for democracy was exemplified by its lack of enthusiasm for parliamentary investigations into the IRA's alleged links with FARC.
