Tributes have been paid to the mayor of South Dublin County Council Billy Gogarty, who died today.

He was the father of Green Party TD Paul Gogarty.

Mr Gogarty senior was a representative for Lucan and a long serving member of the Green Party. He had been ill for several months.

Party leader John Gormley tonight offered his condolences to Paul, his mother Mary and family.

"I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to Paul Gogarty, Billy's son and a member of our parliamentary party, and to Paul's mother Mary and their family," he said.

"Billy was a pillar of the community and a tireless worker. His death is a blow to the entire community of Lucan."

Green Party General Secretary Colm O'Caomhanaigh also expressed his sympathies.

"This is a sad day for the Green Party and I would like to extend my sympathies on behalf of the staff, councillors and members of the party.

"Billy will be sorely missed and we are thinking of Paul and his family at this time."

Mr Gogarty was co-opted onto South Dublin County Council on October 9th last after his son's closest adviser, Cllr Fintan McCarthy was killed in a crash during a holiday in China in 2006.

While he was born in Palmerstown, he had lived with his family in Lucan for 33 years. He had a long association with the community, most notably with Lucan  Sarsfields, where he has served as chairman for a number of terms.
