Three more people have been killed on the roads, two men in Co Offaly and a woman in Co Mayo.

In Co Mayo, a 24-year-old woman was killed when she lost control of the vehicle she was driving, which hit an embankment and ended in a shallow drain. The accident happened on the Westport-Louisburgh road at about 3.20 p.m.

Two men were killed following a road accident outside Tullamore, Co Offaly. Mr Ben Hennessy (34), Tullow Road, Carlow, and Mr P.J. Culleton (27), Little Barrack Street, Carlow, died following a collision with another car at Myra, three miles on the Tullamore side of Mountmellick, at 7.55 a.m.

The men, who were electricians, were on their way to work on a contract in Tullamore when the collision occurred. Both were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident and were removed to the County Hospital, Portlaoise.

The driver of the other car, who was from the Tullamore area, was critically injured and taken to Tullamore General Hospital.

It is understood the accident occurred at a sharp right-hand bend close to the scene of another road fatality four years ago.

Mr Culleton is survived by his parents and his two young children. Mr Hennessy is survived by his parents, his wife, Maura, and their 10-month-old daughter, Eve.

Meanwhile, four people were brought to hospital in Co Cork early yesterday morning following a two-vehicle traffic accident between Ballincollig and Macroom. The collision happened at 1.25 a.m.

One car was driven by a man in his 60s who is said to be from the area. The driver of the other vehicle was a male in his 20s who was accompanied by his two sisters.

Cork city fire brigade arrived on the scene and cut the passengers out of the cars. All four were taken to Cork University Hospital where their condition is described as not serious.

In Co Down, a motorcyclist who died in a road accident was named yesterday as Mr Martin Kelly (33), Meadow Court, Ardglass. He was killed when his motorcycle crashed on the Downpatrick Road at Killough.

Police yesterday appealed for anyone who saw the accident, particularly a couple who stopped at the scene afterwards, to contact them.

Meanwhile, the funeral takes place in Co Wexford tomorrow of the three-year-old boy who was killed in a road accident near his home on Monday afternoon.

Edward Doran died instantly when he was struck by a passing car near his home in Castlewhite, Gorey. The driver of the car has been treated for shock.

A Garda sergeant who attended the scene of the accident said the tragedy was one of the worst he had experienced.

The funeral Mass takes place in St Bridget's Church, Aska more, at noon with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
