Bilbao - Thousands of people took to the streets across Spain yesterday in a wave of silent protests against the guerrilla group ETA following the assassination of a Basque town councillor.

In dozens of towns and cities, many Spaniards stopped work for 10 minutes at noon to mourn the death of 42-year-old Manuel Zamarreno and to vent their anger against the separatist rebels blamed for killing him in a bomb attack on Thursday.
