On the Town: Tibetan prayer bells tolled to mark the opening of a one-man show by David Balfe at Draíocht in Blanchardstown this week.

The bells rang out "to launch his individual career. May it be a great and a long one", said artist Chris Maguire, of the National College of Art and Design, when he opened the show.

Other artists who work in the Dublin 15 area including Genevieve Harden, Desmond Kenny (whose own work went on show at the Mullingar Arts Centre this week) and Tony Crosbie, gathered in the art centre's ground floor gallery.

David O'Connor, chairman of Draíocht and director of planning with Fingal County Council, praised the artist for his commitment to the local community.

"He has a talent for seeing the special in the ordinary. We feel very proud of him."

Balfe, whose new work centres on rusting tins, barrels and petrol cans, said he looks at "how things transform and deconstruct in the rain. I'm interested in how light plays across it."

David Balfe's work will be on view at Draíocht until Saturday, March 20th
