The Irish Federation of University Teachers has said the Universities Bill will mean a serious deterioration in terms and conditions of employment.

The proposed legislation contains statutory provisions for the suspension or dismissal of employees without qualification, it said. Staff are also excluded from nomination to the governing authorities by outside bodies. The federation also expressed "bewilderment and concern" at the deletion of a section in the current legislation which prohibits tests of religious belief being imposed on employees.
