The Taliban militia said they withdrew from the key northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif today, the Afghan Islamic Press(AIP) reported.

Afghan men attend Friday prayers in Khoja Bahawuddin, a stronghold of the Northern Alliance. The Taliban militia said they withdrew from the key northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif earlier today.

Taliban sources quoted by the Pakistan-based news agency said "they (the Taliban) are regrouping their forces outside the city" after an offensive by the opposition Northern Alliance.

The report said opposition forces had entered Mazar-i-Sharif from the southern part of the city.

"Opposition forces launched their advance amid heavy US air attacks and entered the southern suburbs of the city," AIPsaid.

It said no other details were available.
