THE EU Japan summit, which is being attended by the Taoiseach, Mr Bruton, as president of the EU, is expected to go ahead as planned on Monday.
Despite yesterday's dissolution of the Japanese parliament in preparation for an election on October 20th, sources say the government will remain in office until a new one is elected.
Mr Bruton, who arrived in Tokyo yesterday, is due to have a bilateral meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister, Mr Hashimoto, and an audience with the Emperor, prior to the opening of the summit on Monday morning. He will also have a preparatory meeting with the President of the EU Commission, Mr Santer. Mr Bruton will return to Dublin on Tuesday.
