A suicide car bomb killed 12 people, including three policemen and a child, at a police checkpoint in the western Iraqi city of Ramadi today, police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Tareq Yussuf said another 22 people were wounded, including police and civilians.

A medical source at Ramadi hospital also said 12 people were killed, including one policeman, and 22 wounded.

Ramadi is the capital of Anbar province where US and Iraqi forces are battling an insurgency by al Qaeda and other Sunni Arab militant groups.

In recent weeks insurgents have targeted areas where tribal leaders have spoken out against al-Qaeda.
