PD reaction: Tánaiste Mary Harney said yesterday that Charles Haughey in government had set the foundations for "the historic achievements of our country since then - the peace process and economic recovery".
"In particular, the success of Ireland's International Financial Services Centre is a living tribute to his boldness and determination. His legacy also includes the vibrancy of the arts in Ireland and the excellence of the renovated Government Buildings," she said.
She said that as PD leader she wanted to express her party's sympathy to Maureen Haughey on the death of her husband and to her family, especially Seán, a parliamentary colleague.
Ms Harney was one of a number of TDs who left Fianna Fáil to form the Progressive Democrats in 1985 amid deep division within the party over Mr Haughey's leadership.
Others who left included Des O'Malley and Bobby Molloy.
Yesterday Mr O'Malley did not comment on Mr Haughey's death. His daughter, PD TD Fiona O'Malley, said on his behalf that he had retired from politics and did not want to say anything.
There was no statement from Mr Molloy yesterday and efforts to contact him for comment on Mr Haughey's death proved unsuccessful.
