Damage caused by the last two days of torrential rain and strong winds is expected to cost insurance companies tens of millions of pounds. A spokesman from the Irish Insurance Federation (IIF) said it was too early yet to estimate the cost of the bad weather and advised policyholders who have suffered damage to contact their insurers as quickly as possible.

Many insurance companies are operating emergency helplines for their customers, with practical advice about what steps to take.

The vast majority of householders will be covered for damage caused by flooding under their household buildings and contents insurance. Damage to cars is covered by comprehensive motor insurance policies, according to the IIF.

The federation advises people affected by the storms to check the full extent of their policies and to contact their insurer or broker straight away.
